Kodi randomly stops playback, logs "source read returned -1!" and "File ended prematurely"

Problem:  As title.  Reboots don't help. Reason:  Kodi is having problems reading the source file, to the point where it just has to give up. I know you're pissed at Kodi right now, and I can't blame you.  I don't really get why it doesn't automatically log critical errors for you, or why it can't show an on-screen error, rather than making you manually activate an obtrusive logging system and hope the problem comes back.  It's stupid, honestly. Unfortunately, the solution can be difficult to track down, especially if the problem is intermittent or random. As most issues are software, I first looked at my NAS, which had been on for two years straight.  So I tried rebooting it, even though all the resource readouts showed it was fine and there were no other issues.  That (predictably) didn't help, but it was still the most logical place to start. Afterwards, I mused switching the Kodi PC to Wi-Fi, but that seemed like a dodge.  I rather wanted to k...

Bosch SHP65T56UC dishwasher stops randomly without error code

TL;DR:  The machine thinks that the door is being opened during the cycle, hence no error codes. It's one of three things: •  The door IS actually being opened, without you knowing, by a child / family member who does not know how to restart the wash cycle;  •  The control board has gone bad; or •  The door switch has gone bad. In a (somewhat rare) twist, my local shop wanted $350 (after diagnostics fee) to replace less than $100 in parts, so I DIY'd it.  I realize that sounds (stereo)typical but I've not (knowingly) gotten ripped off that badly for a while. •  Control board replacement video here •  Door switch replacement video here Interestingly, the door switch uses a magnet and Hall-effect sensor to determine if the door is closed or not.  It should be reliable... Tips: •  I found it helpful to stick something under the door to keep the front panel from falling off when you remove the door screws.  I used both a cardboard ...

Sudden unexplainable Zimbra / Shaw Webmail "Could not send message: mail.SEND_FAILURE" error

Problem:  As title.  Probably affects only one email draft, others are fine. Possible solution:  You might have attached a Windows shortcut file (i.e. *.pdf.lnk) rather than the actual intended file (*.pdf).   It seems Zimbra tries to follow or validate that shortcut before sending, and cannot, and so barfs the "SEND_FAILURE" error.

Synology Surveillance Station camera options "Edit" and "Enable" are grayed out / unavailable

Problem:  Per title. Possible solution:  You may be using a cell phone as a camera via the "Synology LiveCam" app. If so, Surveillance Station is not able to do the settings for that camera because the relevant settings are done in the app itself.  Tap the gear icon on the LiveCam app screen to find them. If that's not it, the most likely possibility is that the account you are using does not have permissions to use Surveillance Station.  This will have to be fixed in the Control Panel settings of the NAS itself.

Sudden drop in Macrium Reflect backup speeds under USB boot rescue environment

This one is likely specific to my machine, but hey.   Problem:  Macrium Reflect backup times in the WinPE boot rescue environment (i.e. booted from a Macrium USB stick) suddenly change from acceptable (~500-700 M/s, 1-6 hours) to ridiculously slow (< 40 M/s, 100+ hours). Macrium starts well, but "hesitate" about 3-6 seconds after starting a backup (no updates on screen), after which read speed is updated to a very slow number.  Additional hesitations may occur as Macrium struggles to read the source disk. Speeds under Windows proper are fine, and this will occur when writing to multiple backup targets  (i.e. to NAS, to another internal HDD/SDD, to an external USB HDD, etc.)  There are no indications of problems with either the source disk or the target disk.   Possible solution:  Try swapping your source drive to a different SATA port. This is a nasty one, as no one expects a SATA port to misbehave.  Because they never do. In my case, I thought...

Fox News is not news

Proof? Between April 2 and April 4, 2025, all major stock indices dropped more than 5% (Dow) and 20% (Nasdaq).  The S&P 500 was down about 15% from its previous high; the full extent of the sell-off is yet to be revealed. Fox News, however, does not consider this important.   As of 3:00pm EDT on April 4, 2025, the first story regarding the stock market is #12 on their page - "below the fold"* - right between the daily summary and George Clooney's wife . No, not kidding: The first article to mention tariffs is #19, and the words "stock" and "stock market" do not appear at all. Thank God we have Fox.  Otherwise, you might think something was amiss.   *  below the fold = below the first major advertising banner.  Not the same physically, but similar in presentation and intent. **  Yes, Fox uses a rolling format where older stories are pushed lower.  That's an interesting design choice, to say the least.
